How to Reach Aizawl?
By Air : Flights from Calcutta, Silchar and Guwahati connect Aizawl, the capital city, six days a week.
By Rail : Mizoram does not have any rail links. The nearest railhead, Silchar, in Assam, is 180 km away. Silchar railway station is well connected to Aizawl along National Highway 54 by buses and hired taxis. However, the most convenient railhead is Guwahati (Assam), which is very well connected to the rest of India. From Guwahati to Aizawl, it is a 506 km drive and there are plenty of buses and taxis that cover the distance.
By Road : The north-eastern states of India are linked to Mizoram by reasonably good roads. Silchar to Aizawl (180 km) is a 6-8 hr journey on the National Highway 54. Reasonably good roads link Guwahati (506 km), Imphal (374 km), Kohima (497 km), (Shillong 430 km) and Agartala (443km) to Aizawl. Several buses ply between these distances. Taxis and hired cars with chauffeurs are readily available because roads are the only effective way of communication between the neighbouring states and Mizoram.
Best Time to Visit Aizawl
The best time to visit Aizawl is in the winter months between November to March when the temperatures are in the pleasant range between 11º and 29°C. It is a beautiful time of the year in Aizawl as the skies are clear and one can enjoy the scenic beauty which is at it’s best in this region. It rains extensively during end May to September so it may be best to avoid this time as roads can be washed away due to the heavy rainfalls.
Christmas is widely celebrated in Aizawl and is a time for good cheer. The other festival they celebrate is ‘kut’ which is three times a year – February, September and November and are related to the planting and harvesting of the crops.
Things to do in Aizawl
Aizawl is a hidden land in the north east state of Mizoram. Within the town limits there may not be many things to do or see, but venture out into the surrounding areas and take in the lovely scenic views afforded. Small villages abound and one can see how the tribals of the area live. Buy some bamboo handicrafts from them to take back home as a reminder of your visit to Mizoram.
Places Near Aizawl
Take a day trip out to see some places near Aizawl – there are some beautiful picnic spots nearby. Bung and Paikhai are two popular picnic destinations about 16 kms from Aizwal.
Tamdil Lake is 60km away from Aizawl and will take you three hours by road. It is a scenic and peaceful picnic spot that also has fish farms. Tamdil is also a popular spot for boating.
Champai, 192km from Aizawl, is picturesque with rhododendrons crowding the surrounding hills. It has a stunning view of the emerald rice fields that border the hills of Myanmar. Champai is a small bustling town and if you are a nature lover, this is a sight worth seeing.
Dampa is a huge wildlife sanctuary easily accessible from Aizawl by hired 4WDs. Sprawling over 572 sq. km., it is home to East Himalayan wild animals like tigers, bears, bisons and bears. It is a favourite destination of butterfly and bird enthusiasts.
Phawngpui is the highest peak and the answer for the adventurous trekkers and mountaineers. This peak is also referred as the Blue Mountain and is close to the Myanmar border. It is also famous for a rare variety of herbs and orchids.
